The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has officially inaugurated the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Programme in the region, a key component of Ghana’s Feed Ghana Initiative. He described the program as a vital step toward alleviating poverty, generating employment, increasing household incomes, and enhancing food security across the area.

During the launch, Minister Gunu emphasized that the initiative extends beyond poultry farming; it serves as a practical tool for economic empowerment targeted at households, youth, and aspiring agribusiness entrepreneurs throughout the region.

He explained that the program is expected to stimulate local economic activity by creating opportunities along the entire poultry value chain, boosting local food production, and encouraging self-sufficiency within communities.

As part of the program’s rollout, the region has received 180,000 day-old chicks to support beneficiaries, especially households and young entrepreneurs eager to build sustainable livelihoods through poultry farming.

Mr. Gunu expressed confidence that the initiative would provide lasting economic relief for families while fostering self-employment and growth in agribusiness. He also highlighted that Nkoko Nkitinkiti echoes traditional community practices, where raising poultry has historically served as a reliable financial safety net for many households.

He noted that in the past, selling a few chickens often helped families meet urgent needs such as paying school fees, covering healthcare expenses, or addressing other household emergencies. “In many ways, Nkoko Nkitinkiti is a revival of an age-old poverty reduction strategy that empowered families at the grassroots level,” he said.

The Regional Minister reaffirmed the government’s dedication to agricultural programs that directly improve livelihoods and strengthen food security, particularly in rural communities. He commended all stakeholders involved in implementing the program, expressing optimism that it will significantly uplift local economies and contribute to regional development.

He also urged beneficiaries to fully utilize the support provided to ensure the program’s sustainability and long-term success.

Nkoko Nkitinkiti is a flagship project under the broader Feed Ghana Programme, which aims to increase agricultural productivity, improve food availability, and foster sustainable economic opportunities nationwide. Designed to enhance domestic poultry production, the initiative seeks to promote food sovereignty and create lasting employment opportunities in Ghana.
