Heavy traffic and a shortage of vehicles have left thousands stranded at major bus stops across Accra, just hours before Ghana faces England in the World Cup group stage second leg.
At 4pm local time, workers who closed early to get home in time for kickoff found themselves stuck.
Major transport hubs including, Kaneshie, Tema Station, and Kwame Nkrumah Circle were jammed with commuters chasing trotros and taxis, but few cars were moving.
“We closed at 4pm sharp to make it home before the match. Now it’s 6pm and I’m still at Circle. No car, no space, just traffic,” one fan told fmnewsonline.com while balancing on the edge of a packed bus stop.
Match fever meets Accra traffic
The Ghana vs England clash has gripped the city.
With kickoff scheduled for 8:00pm GMT, fans are desperate to beat the gridlock.
But the usual rush-hour congestion has been made worse by match-day movement, road closures around viewing centers, and more people trying to leave work early.
For many, the plan was simple: close early, get home, charge phones, join friends at viewing centers.
What fans are saying “Ghana vs England shouldn’t start without us”, Workers at Kaneshie said they’d rather miss the first 15 minutes than miss the whole game.
With traffic still locked and kickoff approaching, thousands risk missing the first half.
Viewing centers across Accra are already filling up, but getting there is the real battle.
The Black Stars will face England on the pitch tonight. In Accra, fans are already fighting their own match — against traffic.
