The engagement, held at Dodowa, brought together Queen Mothers from various communities across the region to reflect on the successful celebration of this year’s Homowo and discuss issues affecting women and traditional leadership.
The meeting was led by the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, in collaboration with the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo.
The two officials commended the Queen Mothers and other traditional stakeholders for their contribution towards ensuring a peaceful and successful 2026 Homowo celebration.
The engagement also provided an opportunity to discuss the important role of Queen Mothers in bringing their communities together and promoting development. Particular attention was given to their participation and inclusion in the Regional House of Chiefs.
The Deputy Minister and the Regional Minister encouraged the Queen Mothers to continue using their influence to promote peace, unity and development in their respective communities.
As part of the engagement, the Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) was invited to educate the Queen Mothers on opportunities available through the Centre.
The MASLOC CEO, Abigail Akwambea Elorm Mensah explained how Queen Mothers and other women could access loans to establish or expand businesses and improve their livelihoods.
The programme also included a health education session, during which a health practitioner spoke extensively about the wellbeing of Queen Mothers and women in general.
The health practitioner addressed issues including mental health, HIV awareness, regular medical check-ups, proper nutrition and the need for adequate rest and sleep.
The Queen Mothers were encouraged to take their health seriously by eating well, getting sufficient rest and sleep, and going for regular medical examinations to detect and address health challenges early.
The session also highlighted the importance of mental health, with women encouraged to seek help and support when dealing with emotional or psychological challenges.
The engagement served not only as a celebration of the successful 2026 Homowo Festival but also as a platform to empower Queen Mothers and strengthen their contribution to the development and wellbeing of communities across the Greater Accra Region.
The Ministry expressed its commitment to continuing engagements with traditional leaders and other stakeholders to promote peace, inclusive traditional governance and sustainable community development.
