The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has named veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach of the Black Stars, tasking him with leading the team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The 71-year-old brings decades of international experience to the role. Queiroz has previously managed Portugal, Iran, Colombia, and Egypt, and led Iran and Portugal at past World Cup tournaments. He also served as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United and as Real Madrid head coach.
His appointment comes as Ghana seeks to secure qualification for the 2026 World Cup, set to be co-hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. The Black Stars are currently in the qualifying campaign for the expanded 48-team tournament.
Queiroz is expected to take charge immediately and oversee the team’s upcoming qualifiers. The GFA said his mandate includes building a competitive squad, improving tactical discipline, and returning Ghana to the world stage after missing the 2022 edition.
Known for his defensive organization and emphasis on structure, Queiroz has a reputation for maximizing results with emerging football nations. He led Iran to back-to-back World Cups in 2014 and 2018, and guided Egypt to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final.
His backroom staff and contract details are yet to be announced.
