Heavy rains have left a trail of destruction across South Tongu, with several communities submerged and basic schools forced to close, MP Maxwell Kwame Lukutor has said.
Speaking to
fmnewsonline.com, the MP said areas including Kpotame, Vume, Tefle, Sokpe, Sogakope Township, and Dabala have been hit hardest.
According to him, the district’s geography makes it vulnerable. “Just because they have challenges with the drainage system, all the water flows from Ziope, Adaklu and parts of Ho, comes straight to South Tongu due to it being geographically surrounded by the Sogakope Dam and Keta Lagoon complex,” Lukutor explained.
The MP confirmed that a number of basic schools have been affected, with Aduto Basic School among those closed down due to flooding.
Lukutor said his office, in collaboration with NADMO, is currently mobilizing relief items for victims.
“We are mobilising relief items like food, blankets, and temporary structures for those displaced,” he said, adding that some residents have been reluctant to leave their homes despite the risk.
He called for urgent government and stakeholder support to address both the immediate humanitarian needs and the long-term drainage challenges that keep channeling floodwaters into South Tongu.
