In a historic move to preserve the cultural heritage of the Ga people, the Member of Parliament for the Odododiodioo constituency, in the Greater Accra Region Alfred Nii Kotey Ashie, successfully hosted the revival of the annual Kpaa Shimor and Sese Bulemor on Monday, January 19, 2026.
The event, which had been abandoned for several years, serves as a cornerstone of the recreational and spiritual life of the local fisherfolk. Kpaa Shimor (traditional tug-of-war) and Sese Bulemor (ceremonial crate lifting) are demonstrations of the physical resilience and communal spirit required for the fishing trade, which is the lifeblood of the Gamashie economy.

*Driving Tourism and Unity*
The festival attracted thousands of residents and visitors, turning the coastal suburb into a vibrant hub of song, dance, and athletic competition. Beyond the celebration, the MP emphasized the event’s role in:
• Strengthening Community Ties: Bridging the gap between the youth and elders through shared heritage.
• Economic Development: Positioning the constituency as a cultural tourism destination to attract domestic and international visitors.
“Our traditions are the foundation of our progress, I will also bring back Regatta, the annual canoe racing and the famous annual barefoot soccer of the fisherfolk,” the MP stated during the event. “By bringing back these games, we are ensuring that the bravery and unity of the Ga fisherfolk are never forgotten.”

The office of the MP intends for this to remain an annual fixture, ensuring the flame of Gamashie culture continues to burn bright.
