The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, has announced a significant increase in the penalty fine for overloaded trucks, from GH¢5,000 to GH¢50,000.
This move aims to curb the widespread practice of axle overloading, which has been causing significant damage to the country’s roads.
The new policy also holds cargo owners jointly accountable with drivers and includes the seizure and auctioning of excess goods found on overloaded trucks, with proceeds directed into the Road Fund for maintenance.
Minister Agbodza emphasized that the objective is to eliminate axle overloading, not generate revenue, and urged transporters to comply with the law to avoid penalties.
The government plans to ramp up operations at weigh stations and mobile checkpoints to enforce the new rules.
