Albert Akuka Alalzuuga, Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), has called on corporate Ghana to support ongoing efforts to combat flooding in Ghana, with a particular focus on the Greater Accra Region.
In an exclusive interview with fmnewsonline.com, Mr. Alalzuuga spoke about the current flooding situation in parts of Greater Accra. He emphasized the vital role that the private sector can play in disaster preparedness and response, urging corporate entities to collaborate with NADMO by providing resources, funding, and technical expertise to help manage and mitigate the devastating impacts of floods.
The NADMO official also issued a stern warning to landowners and prospective buyers, advising them to steer clear of flood-prone areas. “To prevent disasters when the rains come, it is crucial that land is acquired and developed responsibly. Staying away from flood-prone zones can save lives and reduce property damage,” he stated.
Alalzuuga underlined the importance of community awareness and proactive measures, urging residents to stay vigilant and heed early warnings. He reiterated NADMO’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property but emphasized that effective flood management relies heavily on partnerships with the private sector and responsible land use.
As more rains are expected, NADMO cautions landowners against selling flood-prone areas to unsuspecting buyers. Both sellers and buyers are urged to conduct thorough land searches before transactions to avoid future disaster.
Experts warn that rapid urbanization and inadequate drainage systems continue to heighten flood risks in Accra. Stakeholders are encouraged to work together to implement sustainable solutions to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
