Rita Odoley Sowa, Member of Parliament for La Dadekotopon, expressed her enthusiasm and optimism about the recently concluded 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family, Sovereignty, and Values. Speaking passionately, she emphasized the importance of safeguarding African identity amidst the influence of social media.
“I’m really excited that this conference focused on sovereignty and values,” MP Sowa stated. “As Africans, our core family unit brings us together, but these days, we’re falling apart, largely due to the influence of social media, which is not always helpful.”

She noted that many speakers at the conference addressed the challenges facing Africa and stressed the need for unity. “How can we come together as Africans and be proud of our identity? We must ensure that the sovereignty and values of our continent are not lost,” she asserted.
MP Sowa also raised concerns about the content on social media, which predominantly features European and Western narratives, songs, and stories. She called for a collective effort to promote African culture and stories to future generations. “Our children are growing up with European content—games, songs, stories—what about our folklores and traditions? We need to tell our own stories, showcase our culture, and preserve our identity,” she urged.
As the conference drew to a close, she expressed hope that all participating legislators would carry the discussions back to their respective countries. “We signed a charter during this meeting, and I believe we will work together to ensure a future where Africa’s children and our continent thrive,” she affirmed.

When asked about the energy driving African unity, MP Sowa affirmed the collective resolve. “This is a good energy to push Africa together,” she said. She clarified that the conference was entirely organized and sponsored by African stakeholders, led by the efforts of the Right Honourable Alban Kingsford Vaughan. “There is no foreign sponsorship or influence; everything was organized by Africans. This shows that Africa is up and coming, coming together, and ready to rise again,” she concluded.
MP Sowa’s remarks underscore a shared vision among African leaders to reclaim their cultural heritage, strengthen sovereignty, and unite for a prosperous future.
